SHORT TERM
(Tonight through Wednesday Night) Issued at 1049 PM CDT Mon Aug 31 2026
The upper level ridge is starting to build over the eastern half of the US and that will bring a prolonged period of hot weather.
Highs are already well into the 90s and we will see that continue this week as the ridge remains overhead.
Wednesday and Thursday look to be the peak of the heat with highs pushing into the mid to upper 90s and up to a 40% chance of 100+ for parts of the area.
Once you add in humidity with dew points in the 70s we will see afternoon heat index values push into the triple digits and will be as hot as 109 Wednesday and Thursday.
This heat will bring major to extreme heat risk by the middle of the week.
Overnight lows are also going to remain mild only falling into the 70s.
With the ridge overhead rain chances will be near zero but afternoon cumulus clouds can be expected.
LONG TERM

The upper level ridge will start to break down and build west late week as an upper level trough pushes into the Northeast.
This will start to bring a gradual cooldown Friday into the weekend.
It will still be on the hot side over the holiday weekend but highs should fall back into the low to mid 90s.
Highs will continue to cool into early next week into the upper 80s to lower 90s which is getting a little closer to seasonal norms.
As the ridge breaks down rain chances will increase but overall forcing will be weak keeping the chances low to medium mainly during the afternoons.
